An electric smoke vent is a system made up of the window, actuator, brackets, control equipment, wiring and fire-alarm interface. Correct actuator specifications alone cannot compensate for weak mounting, undersized wiring or incomplete commissioning. Installation and maintenance should therefore consider the complete system.
Mechanical installation
Before installation, verify the sash structure, dimensions, weight, opening direction and required travel. Confirm that the selected chain or spindle actuator matches the window. Brackets must be fixed to surfaces with adequate strength, and their positions must avoid interference with the frame, seals and other hardware. The actuator should not be exposed to abnormal side loading at either end of its travel.
Synchronized drives for wide windows
Wide or heavy sashes may use two or more actuators with a suitable synchronized-control arrangement. If the drives do not move together, the sash can twist, jam or concentrate force at one point. After installation, use controlled initial movements and inspect the complete travel before routine operation.
Wiring and control-panel capacity
Select cable size and control-panel capacity according to actuator operating current, cable distance and the number of actuators that move simultaneously. Fire inputs, power, feedback and everyday ventilation control wiring should follow approved project drawings and be clearly labelled. For external or semi-outdoor locations, verify cable-entry sealing, actuator ingress protection and drainage.
Commissioning tests
Commissioning should cover manual Open, Stop, Close and Reset commands; fire-alarm linkage; fire-priority logic; fault feedback; and required loss-of-power or backup-power conditions. Confirm the actual direction, travel and open position of every window. A control-panel indicator alone does not prove that the mechanical opening is correct.
Periodic inspection
After handover, establish an inspection and testing schedule based on local requirements, the building maintenance plan and product instructions. Check for sash obstruction, smooth chain or spindle movement, loose fixings, damaged cables, control-panel fault indication and correct fire linkage. Investigate unusual noise, slower movement or failure to reach the required position instead of repeatedly forcing the actuator.
